Book Talk ~ Pocketful of Bones

Pocketful of Bones

Brilliant. Inventive. Dark.

Telling you up front I don’t often talk out loud about books I read by my colleagues. Yet once in a while along comes a book that knocks my socks off.  Some indie-authored books I read show raw talent that need polish, although most are well-written and entertaining–which is what a fiction book should be. I’m a writer. I’m a published author. My stories are not going to set the world on fire or earn a million dollars. I don’t expect them to do so. But I know a story teller when I come across one. C.S. Forester is a story teller. His 126 page novel, The African Queen, that I first bought for 35c was made into an unforgettable movie. Canadian author Farley Mowat is a story teller. Even his non-fiction enthrall because they are so honest.

It’s the story tellers who bring us books that once we begin to read, we cannot put down. Won’t. Canadian author Julie Frayn is a story teller. With each book she creates characters we can’t forget. We live in the story and the story lives in us. Writing is a craft, but story telling is a gift. Frayn has that gift. Plus, her stories are polished. Not a word or a scene out of place. Frayn’s stores are edgy, searing and populated by deftly portrayed dysfunctional characters. Frayn’s stories cross a line and are perfectly rendered. Nothing held back. They arise from the deepest, darkest part of the human psyche and that is what makes her stories so engrossing.

I didn’t ‘do’ Mother’s Day with balloons and flowers and grandchildren. No I didn’t. I sat on a park bench in a quiet nature preserve and devoured Pocketful of Bones.
