THE RELUCTANT HERO 99¢ June 28 – July 1

The Reluctant Hero

Parnell Stillman ~ Pilot

Let me introduce you to Parnell Stillman, ace pilot and man to the bone in a lackadaisical kind of way. He has a quirky sense of independence, a poor man’s sense of budget and a manner of dress that would drive a mother crazy. You know that kind of man I mean. Every motorized machine he owns is pristine, but his socks don’t match.

Five Stars! If you…are a Humphrey Bogart/African Queen fan or an Indiana Jones/Raiders of the Lost Ark fan, you will love this book.  ~  A. Burroughs on Amazon.

My Goose is Ticked—But You ain’t Cookin’ it!

gooseWe’re coming off rains and floods in Texas so I don’t have company for a Back Porch CyberChatter. I’m just going to talk to myself out loud—you can listen in.

A blog on Indies Unlimited titled After the Gold Rush ticked my goose. It blogs the same old lament  we’ve been hearing for the past year and a half, The Golden Age of best selling ebooks is over. Left unsaid, but inferred: Jeff Bezos changed the algorithms on Amazon, so a book cannot not hit the bestseller list after a FREE promotion and the title returns to Paid.

Parnell Stillman, ace pilot is man to the bone in a lackadaisical kind of way.  He has the ability to fly through anything except solid mountain.  He lives alone because people are not to be trusted, especially women. Flying is his high road until one sleet-filled morning–it isn’t. Mischance forces his plane down in a frozen wilderness. He can survive, but his live cargo is another matter—an annoying social worker and five orphans—the most irksome freight he’s ever hauled in his life.

A Hallelujah! Moment in a Writer’s Life

Or sometimes it can just be the way the mop flops…

Franklin E. WalesThere is an empyreal quality in life called happenstance. Some call it kismet. Nietzsche called it amor fati.  I’m from the South. If something awful happens and we can’t do anything about it, we just say, ‘that’s the way the mop flops.’ If something good happens, we say, ‘Praise the Lord’ or ‘Hallelujah!’

Mary Mycio

Mary Mycio self-published Doing Bizness: A Nuclear Thriller  in June 2013. She has the background for it. A journalist and the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, Mycio wrote a non-fiction book, Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl. Mycio visited Chernobyl; she speaks the language, she investigated, she met and talked with those in the know. The book was published in 2005. Wormwood Forest reads as solid and as interesting as her fiction. Not a dry word in the tome.

A Home for Wayward Husbands

GrungeAHFWH_10_27_167_243Once in a  while we stumble upon a book that catches our attention, same as if you’re at the beach and some fool yells SHARK!   A Home for Wayward Husbands did just that.  The title caught my eye in a Facebook discussion. I clicked on the link. It took me to a giveaway. I haven’t won anything since fourth grade and that was a box of chocolate covered cherries for going to holy communion more than any other student in class. I was such a good girl! La! I won a copy of  A Home for Wayward Husbands.
