On The Road ~ Books That Travel Well

Written By: Jackie Weger - Dec• 08•18

For your listening pleasure…

Everywhere one turns we see folks wearing ear pods with iPhones tucked into a pocket. They’re listening to audible books. A friend emailed me she listens while washing dishes and cooking supper. Her hands are free to manage tasks she does by rote. The holidays will soon be upon us and folks will be traveling to visit family and friends. And in the rear seats our kids will ask:  “Are we there yet?” because some things never change. Here are a few great audibles to occupy your children as you go across town or cross country. Before I tell you of my favorites, sharing this: These listening books are wonderful for kids in hospitals.

Eleven Complete Stories.

Before audible books my four-year old grandson was laid up with a badly broken leg. He leaned too far out of a window to watch his sister get on the school bus and fell. Scary event. Whoo. We took turns staying with him in the hospital. All he wanted while awake was for us to read The Cat in the Hat. Hours and hours of it until we readers were hoarse. When my turn came around again I took my  recorder, read the book and recorded it. When he asked for the story again, I popped the ear phones on him and pushed play. That boy was happy.  So was I. Now, it’s available on audible. Pick it up for $11.95.  Utter joy!

Here’s two and a half hours of classics even parents will enjoy as tales are brought are to life by award-winning performers such as Audrey Hepburn, John Ritter, Richard Hack and Orson Welles. The best $5.95 you’ll ever spend on  A Treasury of Classic Children’s Stories.  Includes Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast and the Happy Prince plus an array of other classics.

For your teenagers: Telling you, I once owned five of those creatures. I would’ve loved to have had Grade A Stupid by A.J. Lape to entertain them. This is Book one of The Best Selling Darcy Walker series. Darcy is a teenaged Stephanie Plum. I love Darcy. She’s adorable and full of mischief. The story is complete with spies, thrills, mysteries and adventure. Great listening for both the guys and girls. $14.95 but often FREE with audible trial. Check.

For laugh-out-loud funny, consider the high jinx of Phoebe Hawley, an out-of-work mill girl on a quest to find her family a home. An old house on an Alabama estuary will do, even if it’s in the middle of a junkyard. The owner says, “No way. Move on.” But Phoebe sees golden opportunity and squats like an old time land grabber. She needs to win the junkyard owner over, but it’s not a sure thing and she knows it.  Finding Home. On Amazon. On iTunes.

If psychic suspense is your forte you won’t go wrong with Mind Games as Diana Racine, psychic entertainer, takes you through murder and mayhem in that high-stepping city of magic and music on the Mississippi River and into the swamps and bayous where cunning evil dwells trying to outwit all things good, especially Diana. On Amazon.

That’s all I have for you today. Enjoy!

Thanks for a great list of audio books for all ages! Brilliant idea for Cat in the Hat ~ wish I’d thought about that for Green Eggs and Ham. I need to travel so I can listen to my growing list of “TBLs”!

I think these will be a life saver for many parents and children, travelling or not. And I can see where children in hospital could really enjoy them!

  9. Livia Quinn says:

I’ve been an Audible member since they started and since I’ve had so much trouble with my eyes, I rely on it to enjoy my books. These are great suggestions.

Oh and I paired my regular membership last month with a special priced membership in the romance club which is kind of like KU for audible. So authors I wouldn’t normally buy I could try.
