The Perils of Pauline vs Indie Authorship

Jackie Weger

Jackie Weger

Do you remember silent films? And poor Pauline tied to the railroad tracks, a huge black locomotive chugging toward her, the train whistle blasting and the music thundering? I forget the hero who always rescued Pauline… I liken digital publishing to the Perils of  Pauline–except  we don’t have a lovely hero…we have to rescue ourselves when our careers or books are on the edge of a cliff on in front of that dang train bearing disaster upon us. I just this week rescued No Perfect Secret  and a blot on my career within minutes of a train wreck.

Meet the eBook Your Escape Authors

Christine Gabriel
Christine Gabriel, a diehard Buckeye fan, grew up in the small farming community of Monroeville, Ohio where she spent much of her time writing imaginative stories. She has spent the last ten years managing a financial institution in Norwalk, Ohio in which she’s learned that compassion and love are her greatest gifts to give to others.
She has a small tribe of children who have become her biggest fans and most honest critics. She’s an avid animal lover and has been known to bring home a stray to cuddle with her while she writes. She’s also deathly afraid of earthworms and will cross the street in order to avoid one on the sidewalk. She loves vanilla coffee and can’t begin her morning without it, even knowing that doing so has consequential effects that could potentially cause a Zombie Apocalypse.
Christine’s most important view is that her readers are able to escape out of their realities and enjoy a little piece of her imagination. She holds each one of her readers close to her heart and loves them as if they were one her dearest friends. She currently resides in Norwalk, Ohio where she’s working on Crimson Moon, Book Two of The Crimson Chronicles series.

Happily Ever After–Just for Today

For the first time in my life this week I shopped online for something other than a book.  I saw a pair of fab shoes on a Bingo pal last week and she told me she  got  them on Amazon.  I’m a writer.  I live on Amazon, but it never occurred to me to shop for clothes, or jewelry or shoes.  Now it does.   I’ve had a good week.  Actually, I’ve had a good month thus far. I got a nice royalty check, I won two back-to-back jackpots at Bingo, everybody I know is alive and well and my latest book is on my editor’s desk getting its last soft edit and final proof. Here’s the snag. My writing cave needs a good cleaning. My desk is a wreck. But I’m superstitious. I don’t clean it or move a single piece of paper or note or list of words or character outlines or bits of  dialogue or my dictionaries until the finished book is published.  So! I need something else to clean.

Amazon unleashes new subscription program: Kindle Unlimited

Jackie Weger

Unleashed July 18, 2014 on all indie authors published in KDP Select on Amazon and Amazon readers, too,  Kindle Unlimited is a new subscription service. $9.99 a month. Readers can download unlimited titles for $9.99 as opposed to Amazon Prime that allows only a single title borrow per month. Critical to authors–in order to get paid a portion of the global fund $ set aside in KOLL, a reader must read at least 10% of the book.  Subscribers to  Amazon Prime need only to ‘borrow’ the title for the author to get a royalty. No reading required. Indie authors across the internet and in blogs and forums are looking askance at Kindle Unlimited and wondering what the heck it means. Asking how they’ll get paid for the download–if ever.

My Goose is Ticked—But You ain’t Cookin’ it!

gooseWe’re coming off rains and floods in Texas so I don’t have company for a Back Porch CyberChatter. I’m just going to talk to myself out loud—you can listen in.

A blog on Indies Unlimited titled After the Gold Rush ticked my goose. It blogs the same old lament  we’ve been hearing for the past year and a half, The Golden Age of best selling ebooks is over. Left unsaid, but inferred: Jeff Bezos changed the algorithms on Amazon, so a book cannot not hit the bestseller list after a FREE promotion and the title returns to Paid.
