#FRUGAL FRIDAY

Do you need money to hire Beta Readers? Copy Editors? Cover Artists?

What about a bit of pocket change to promote your book?

Snipit dollar signsWell, most of us do. We indie authors are up against it. One lament I hear every single time I visit a forum or a Facebook group is: “I can’t afford _______.”  Just fill in the blank. Some of us lie to ourselves because we don’t want to afford those services.  And gosh, it sounds just fine to plead poverty. Gives the image of the struggling author living in a cold-water garret suffering for his craft. Some consider publishing a book an adventure. “Hey, if I make a little money on the side, great. If not, I’m in the groove. I’m a published author.” Chatting that up on a first date, or with the carpool mommies, or at cocktail parties has more cachet than saying, “I work at Walmart.”

Are You Superstitious?

Jackie Weger

Superstitious Author,
Jackie Weger

I am superstitious. I can’t help it. I don’t know where it comes from. I don’t  sit on a bed after it is made to perfection and I have heart failure if any visitor to my home does. Pull the covers down first if you need to nap. That’s fine.  Okay.  So now I’m a writer. I need good luck along with craft and a few good author pals. I have a keeper who likes to nap. And I have cats for the first time in my life. Cats are no respecters of superstition. I don’t make the bed up any more. There is good luck, bad luck and no luck. Not making up my bed guarantees NO LUCK.  I’m good with it.  The cats are good with it and my keeper is good with it–or maybe not, but I didn’t ask his opinion.

My Goose is Ticked—But You ain’t Cookin’ it!

gooseWe’re coming off rains and floods in Texas so I don’t have company for a Back Porch CyberChatter. I’m just going to talk to myself out loud—you can listen in.

A blog on Indies Unlimited titled After the Gold Rush ticked my goose. It blogs the same old lament  we’ve been hearing for the past year and a half, The Golden Age of best selling ebooks is over. Left unsaid, but inferred: Jeff Bezos changed the algorithms on Amazon, so a book cannot not hit the bestseller list after a FREE promotion and the title returns to Paid.
