The Art of Being Poor–2nd Edition

Pennies to Dollars

What is “Poor” anyway?

Snip KrisKristine Kathryn Rusch aka Kristine Grayson who writes wonderful paranormal romances in addition to the popular blog kriswrites.com posted a telling article this week titled: Business Musings: Writer Finances Versus The Paycheck World. Kris is speaking of writers who made a mint early in our digital universe and now they don’t.  Back in 2011 and 2012, an indie author who ran a book FREE and  snagged Bookbub  could depend upon hitting bestseller stats, plus many saw royalties in the six figures. Here’s why: In 2012 a FREE download counted as a full sale/priced book when the free unit returned to priced on Amazon.  Then Amazon changed the algorithms that a free downloaded unit counted as one-tenth of a full sale/priced book. That leveled the playing field. Too, many of those books that hit the best seller lists did not measure up to what many readers consider Best Sellers.

There really is an art to being poor.

It’s funny that for most of my life I had no idea that I was poor or lived in poverty. True, I was raised poor, married poor, had a slew a kids and so stayed poor. I budgeted every nickel. Now here’s the thing. My parents came from good families. Working stock. My grandfathers owned their own businesses. All had been through the Depression. Money was tight. Next along came World War II and my uncles and dad went into the military.  We had coupons for every shortage–shoes, fabric, sugar, butter, gas. I had my first stick of gum after the War. Juicy Fruit. One pair of buckled sandals got us through summers, otherwise we went barefoot. A six ounce Coca Cola was 6 cents and a treat.

Jackie Weger. Do subscribe to my newsletter, sent about once a month. It is always full of free and discounted books. Thank you for visiting today.

Good Morning. I’m Jackie Weger, founder of eNovel Authors at Work. I write romance novels. The heroines in my books are good girls in turmoil. The heroes  lean toward the alpha–good men all, because good men make good husbands and better fathers.  My books are not going to shake the world by its roots. I write to entertain. Sometimes I get it done, sometimes I don’t. Goes with the territory. When I don’t get the job done right, I keep trying…I don’t blame Amazon if my book doesn’t sell, or  rail at Bookbub because a book did not snag a coveted promotion slot, or sound off because readers don’t post reviews.  Which brings me to topic: Facebook and Amazon Community discussion forums. No promotion allowed.
